Blue Devils roll in home opener

Corvallis 22, Ronan 19

Corvallis upped their record to 2-0 in non conference play Friday night after defeating Ronan, 22-19, in their home opener. The game was the first on the new field located east of Eastside Highway in the Corvallis Community Complex.

Matt Smith carried the ball for 163 yards on 16 carries. He scored twice, once on a 65-yard run and then again with a 41-yard dash. Jake Sangster kicked the PAT for both touchdowns. Corvallis’ final touchdown came when Drew Brown crashed across the goal line from five yards out. The two point conversion by Nathan Dubose was good as well, giving the Blue Devils their second victory of the season. Last week, Browning fell to Corvallis.

Stevensville 34, Livingston 7

The Yellowjackets came back from a loss last week with a win over the Park County Rangers of Livingston. The ‘Jackets scored in each of the quarters to cruise to a 34-7 non conference victory. Two of the touchdowns were fumble recoveries. The scoring was spread around with juniors Ethan Pateman, Boone Chambers and Richie Brushia each crossing the goal line. Sophomore Drew Zeiler also scored, as did Ryan Williams.

Pateman scored on a nine-yard run in the first quarter. Brushia kicked the PAT for the extra point. Next up was Brushia with a one-yard lunge into the end zone.

Then the Stevensville defense went to town. Ryan Williams recovered a Ranger fumble for six. Chambers made another fumble recovery in the end zone in the third quarter and the ‘Jacket faithful were looking for a shutout. Zeiler caught a 21-yard pass from Brushia for the final Yellowjacket touchdown. The Brushia kick for the PAT was good.

Livingston scored in the final period when Rhennon Stoddard carried the ball in from seven yards out. Cole Bruha kicked the PAT.

Hamilton 46, Bigfork 0

Hamilton traveled to Bigfork to take on the Northwestern A team. The mood was subdued with the Bigfork players sporting the initials of Jeffery Bowman on their helmets. Bowman collapsed the first day of practice and died a week later.

Hamilton dominated the game and cruised to a 46-0 win. The Broncs rushed for 213 yards and passed for 131 yards. Ryan Turley had two touchdowns on the ground and caught a 61-yard pass from Jason Schallenberger for another. Brady Anderson started the Bronc scoring with a three-yard run. He added another one with another three-yard run. Colton Weigle was the recipient of another Schallenberger touchdown pass in the third quarter. Alex Martin capped off the evening with a one-yard push for the final Hamilton touchdown. Ben Kirkendall kicked four-of-seven PATs.

Florence 6, Three Forks 0

It was a battle in Three Forks on Friday night when the Florence Falcons met the Three Forks Wolves in a non conference match up. Florence’s Tyler Lind scored the game’s lone touchdown in the first quarter and then went out with an injury just a few minutes later. Lind scored on a six-yard run.

"We had a lot of second stringers in there," said Falcon coach Ed Combo. "They did everything we asked them to do."

What the Falcons did was play tough defense. The secondary stepped up and allowed only one completed pass by the Wolves who tried to pass most of the night.

Combo said the Three Forks team is a tall team and that his team gave up a lot in size but not in determination.

"Max Burns did a great job in the corner position and our secondary did a great job too."

In addition to Lind who strained his knee, Josh Steigler went out with a twisted ankle but returned late in the game. Damon Moe, the Falcons' quarterback had some physical problems as well.

Florence will host another tough team this weekend. The Bluehawks of Thompson Falls make the trip south for the Falcons' second preseason game.

"They are tough and have some good skilled kids," said Combo. Just another battle for the Falcons.

Ryan Turley (22) was no match for the Ronan defense on Friday. Hamilton cruised to a 50-7 non conference victory over the Chiefs.

Troy 34, Darby 6

Darby fell to Troy, 34-6. Using a solid rushing front, the Trojans moved the ball up the field for 34 unanswered points. Keith Hamblin scored the only touchdown for the Tigers on a two-yard run.

Drummond 50, Victor 6

Victor made the trip to Drummond to take on the Trojans in their opening game of the year. The Trojans outgunned the Pirates, 50-6. Drummond’s strong running game was more than the Pirates could handle. Victor did score when Eric Bissett caught a 15-yard pass from Gaitlin Lamb.
