Missoula Art Museum ArtiniThe Missoula Art Museum (MAM) proudly presents a new series of events for western Montanans interested in an engaging art experience in which they can network socially and professionally. The first Artini Thursday event will be held on Thursday, August 11 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in MAM's Temporary Contemporary in The Florence (111 N. Higgins Ave.). MAM encourages new visitors to attend this hot, multi-sensory event featuring contemporary art, performance and a themed martini. Fire is the theme of the first Artini Thursday, which references the firing of ceramics. The event will be held during the exhibition "Small Clay" on view through August 27, with entertainment provided by fire jugglers Glen Kreisel and Thom Sanders-Garrett on the Higgins Avenue sidewalk outside MAM's Temporary Contemporary in the Florence building. Musician Pam Adams will also perform in the Florence building lobby and MAM Curator of Exhibitions Stephen Glueckert will present a gallery talk in which he'll discuss the firing techniques of objects on view in the exhibition "Small Clay." Martinis will be available for sale at this free event. MAM Manager of Community Outreach & Membership Nici Holt and an enthusiastic committee of young professionals planned the event because they want to draw younger visitors to MAM and create a social outlet that is different from anything else in Missoula. Call MAM at 728-0447 for more information. Ravalli Democratic Mule TeamThe Hon. George McGovern will be the guest speaker at the meeting of the Ravalli Democratic Mule Team on Friday, August 19 at 12 noon at the Banque Club/Exchange in Hamilton. McGovern, who currently resides near Stevensville, was formerly a U.S. Senator, and a Presidential candidate. Recently he served as U.S. Ambassador to United Nations Programs for Hunger and Relief located in Rome, Italy. He is an active member of a number of organizations including Bread for the World and Missoula Food Bank. He is the author of a number of books and has a new one coming out. Stevi School fall registrationFall registration for Stevensville School District 2 will be held August 23-25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in all three school offices. Requirements for entrance is a copy of birth certificate and current immunization records. Freshman orientation will be held Tuesday, August 30 at 7 p.m. in the high school gym. Parenting classes"Parenting the Second Time Around" is the subject of informational sessions being offered by Kids First and Child and Family Services for those who are parenting their relative's children (grandchildren, nieces, nephews, siblings, etc.). Some of the topics covered in this course will be changing family dynamics, shared parenting, stress management, and effective discipline skills. Guest speakers will be brought in, based on the interests of the class participants. The first session will be held on Thursday, August 25 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Westview Center, 103 S. 9th in Hamilton. The sessions are free. Registration for free childcare is required by August 23. Aglow International conventionAglow International's Fall Retreat will be held Sept 9-11 at the Billings Hotel & Convention Center, 1223 Mullowney, Billings. The Worship Leader will be Terry Jahner, renowned singer, musician and recording artist. The mission of Woman's Aglow is to lead women to Jesus Christ and provide opportunity for Christian women to grow in their faith and minister to others. For more information call Jill at 406-257-3756. Aspen Hospice raffleAspen Hospice Charitable Foundation is holding a raffle to benefit Hospice patients. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go back into the Bitterroot community. Items to be raffled include a handmade quilt, gift certificates for massages, chocolate and gift stores, gift baskets, and more. Tickets are being sold for $1 each or six for $5, and are available at Valley Drug in Stevensville and at Aspen Hospice. Tickets will also be available at the Ravalli County Fair. Friendship ForceThe Friendship Force of Western Montana-Missoula will be hosting members of the Hobart, Tasmania club in their homes from August 15-22. Activities are planned to acquaint the guests with the area. Several potlucks are planned and the club invites any members of the public interested in meeting these guests to attend. For details call Mary Ann at 728-2995. Home School Outdoors Day at Metcalf RefugeOn Tuesday, September 13, a Home School Outdoors Day is scheduled at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge. This day-long educational event is for all home-schooled students from kindergarten through high school. Hands-on and interactive sessions for participants include topics such as wetlands, mammals, waterfowl, bird migration, aquatic insects and fisheries, bird-banding and wilderness education. Each session will be conducted by local experts from the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, the Bitterroot Conservation District, Montana Audubon, the U.S. Forest Service and other organizations. Preregistration is required and check-in time is from 8:30-9:15 a.m. The last session of the day ends at 3:30 p.m. with a living history Lewis and Clark program at the Lee Metcalf NWR amphitheater featuring Ritchie Doyle and David Jolles. Participants and parents should bring their own sack lunches and drinks; a t-shirt will be given to students for the individual registration fee of $2.00. Dances of Universal PeaceDances of Universal Peace are simple circle dances based on the world's spiritual traditions that inspire harmony and community. Each dance is taught each time, and children are welcome. There is live music and refreshments are served. Admission is by donation. The dances are held the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at 7:30 p.m. The next dance is August 13 at Common Ground Center, 258 Roosevelt Lane, Hamilton. Adult anger management classSolutions Mediation Services offers "Chilling Out 101: Anger Management for Adults" on Saturday, September 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (lunch on your own). This five-hour class in Hamilton offers a variety of coursework to address feelings and behaviors (but does not qualify for state-remanded anger management work). Upbeat, interesting and thoughtful dialogue and videos help adults work with strong emotional states. Star Jameson facilitates, and registration is required. Cost is $45. Call 363-4026 for more information. Museum ice cream socialAn ice cream social is planned for Sunday, August 28 from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at the Victor Heritage Museum. Florence Civic Club Golf ScrambleYou are cordially invited to participate in the 9th Annual Florence Civic Club Golf Scramble on Sunday, September 11 at the Whitetail Golf Course in Stevensville. This is the club's annual fund raiser and your support is appreciated. Each year specific community needs are selected as recipients of the funds raised. This year funds will support the Florence Civic Club Scholarship Fund, trail development and other civic projects. This 9-hole Best Ball Golf Scramble will include a catered lunch, beverages and prizes. Registration is from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. with golfing from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. Cost is $30.00 per person (golf cart rental not included). Florence Civic ClubThe next Florence Civic Club meeting will be held on Monday, September 12 at 7 p.m. at the Florence/Carlton Administration Building. Everyone is welcome. Hamilton Players auditionsThe Hamilton Players will be holding auditions for the ghost play, "The Woman In Black," on Monday, August 29 at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Playhouse, 100 Ricketts Road. Roles are available for one woman and two men. There are also several voice-over roles, needing very little rehearsal time. Auditions will be cold readings from the script. No preparation or experience is necessary and the public is invited and encouraged to audition. Scripts are available for check out at Chapter One Bookstore. "The Woman In Black" is about Misty Marshes, an isolated village where citizens hold a secret, a solitary mansion, a graveyard, spectral sightings, a shriek in the night, and a lingering curse. This is an elaborate and challenging play for anyone in the community interested in technical theater. People interested in assisting with the technical aspects of this production are encouraged to contact the director or assistant director. Performance dates are October 6-9, and 13-16. Tuesday at TwelveRuss Nassett will be the featured musician at the free Tuesday At Twelve concert on Tuesday, August 16 at 12 noon at Legion Park in Hamilton. Habitat for Humanity seeks North Valley residentsThe August meeting of Habitat for Humanity of Ravalli County will be held Tuesday, August 16 at the Stevensville United Methodist Church, Third and College. The local affiliate is eager to build interest among residents of the North Valley. Their first Habitat home was built in Hamilton, the second in Corvallis and the third is set to be built in Darby. They hope that the next home will be in Stevensville, Victor or Florence. "We really want to have more representation from the North Valley. Both on our board where decisions are made and among our volunteers," said Bob Bateman, vice president of the local group. "Our goal is to build one house in each community in the county before we build two in any one town. We hope to be able to build one home per year." A lot has been purchased in Darby and a public meeting was held recently at the Darby Library to explain the process and take questions from townspeople. Realtor Chris Miller has donated his commission on the land sale and Farmers State Bank is making the loan at prime rate and donating its interest back to Habitat for Humanity. After the public meeting in Darby and the monthly meeting in Stevensville, Habitat may have a tentative date for ground breaking in Darby, although the recipient family probably will not have been chosen by then, Bateman said. Stevensville MuseumLewis says, "Hey, crew, take a rest and enjoy the nice museum I discovered." Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Stevensville Historical Museum is located at 517 Main in Stevensville. Admission is free. Mature driving classesAARP classes for mature drivers are scheduled for August 18-19 and September 15-16. Museum wine tastingThe Stevensville Historical Museum will hold its tenth annual Wine Tasting on Friday, August 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Come sample a variety of delicious and unusual wines and hors dıoeuvres, and enjoy live music, a silent auction and door prize drawings. Stevi Booster Club meetingThe Stevensville Booster Club will meet Monday, August 15 at 7 p.m. in the high school. Planning for the 2005-06 school year will begin. Creamery Picnic at libraryThe North Valley Library will have a double-header celebration during the Creamery Picnic weekend. First, a reception for the new Library Director, Renee McGrath, will be held on First Friday, August 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Secondly, a bigger-than-big book sale will be held in the libraryıs meeting room on Friday and Saturday, August 5 and 6, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both days.
