That meet will be in Butte this upcoming Friday and Saturday. The top five finishers in each event will advance to the State Class B Meet. The Florence girls brought home the Western B Divisional championship on the heels of Katie Neimeir and her four first place finishes. But it wasnt all Neimeir. Both the 400 relay team of Brandy Crews, Amanda Heffner, Odessa Conley and Cortney Reynolds, and the 1,600 relay team of Reynolds, Heffner, Brooke Zeiler and Conley used precise handoffs and speed to dominate the relays. Sara Schertenleib did her part too, picking up a win in the high jump. When the dust had settled, the Florence team had chalked up 125 points for the championship. Darby finished second with 87, followed by Loyola, Deer Lodge, Seeley-Swan, Valley Christian, Thompson Falls, Superior, Plains, Arlee and Troy. Neimeir won the 200, 400, 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. She was third in the 100. Brandy Crews finished fourth in the 100. Reynolds finished second behind Neimeir in the 400 and third in the 200. Shes hardly run at all," said an emotional Steve Gideon, coach of the Tigers. "She came back even though shes been throwing up all day. I wasnt going to let her run but she wanted to run herself. To coach kids like that, its amazing" Demorest wasnt the only Tiger out there, though. The Darby crew took first, second and fifth in the long jump. Christina Bender jumped 15-9-1/4 to win the event. Missy DeWalt was second with 15-6-3/4, and Rachel Wetzsteon was fifth with 14-7-1/2. DeWalt finished second in the triple jump with 33-6-1/4, and Wetzsteon was third with 32-4-1/2. "We have some track coaches that have done really good over the years. Nate Olsen has been with us for a few years. Merv Smith, a retired coach from California helps out with the jumpers and look at the success there. I grew up with a great coach, Wendell Griffin. Im just so proud of these kids. In our school weve had teams that havent done well but these kids... Im ecstatic." Seeley-Swan won their first divisional championship in more than a decade on the boys side of the Western B. One last tournamentHamilton softball coach Steve Weston has one more item on his to-do list this season - the state tournament in Polson. The Lady Broncs have a first round bye in the tournament Thursday because they only have one conference loss. They will take on the winner of the Columbia Falls/Sidney game at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
We have to come to play every single out and every single pitch, said Weston. This will be Westons last tournament for the Lady Broncs. The 14 year veteran recently tendered his resignation. There comes a time to do this, said Weston of his resignation. All of these girls had older sisters who played for me, It was just time to do it. He went on to say he felt the program would be in great hands. Ive always wanted to leave a program better than when I came in. I think weve done that. Corvallis will have a bye as well. The No. 2 team from the Central division will play the winner of the Butte Central/Belgrade game at 5 pm on Thursday. They are both scrappy teams, said coach Rich Borden. Belgrade swings the bat well and Butte Central is tough in a tournament. Florence will defend their state championship in the Class B/C ranks. The Lady Falcons will take on Shepherd at 11 a.m. in Great Falls. 2006-07AStateSoftballBracke.pdf |
