Butte Softball good to valley teamsThe LaVern Combo Invitational, better known as the Butte Softball Tournament, has always been a good chance for teams on either side of the Continental Divide to size up the competition from the other side of the divide. This is often the only time these teams see each other prior to the state tournaments. Both Class A and Class B teams take part and its a sure bet coaches are taking notice and formulating game plans for the state tournaments. Hamilton had two tough opponents on Friday. The Lady Broncs first game was against Polson who has been at the top of their game this year. Polson took an early lead in the second inning but Hamilton rallied back in the bottom of the third inning to take a one-run lead. Polson took back the lead in the top of the sixth inning with three runs. Hamilton came back though, on the bat of Cierra Smith. Smith knocked a two-RBI triple with two outs to tie and then win the game. Nicki Koning pitched the win for Hamilton. Chelsey Krueger also had two RBIs in the 5-4 victory and Kelly Lokken added one more. Next up for Hamilton was the defending state champion Laurel Locomotives. This was an old fashioned defensive pitchers' duel between Koning and Kirby Myers. Tied at the end of seven innings, the teams used the international tie-breaker to each score once in the eighth inning. Laurel scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning to take the win.
