Hamilton tops Stevensville

The Lady Broncs had a six-run second inning to give them the momentum to defeat Stevensville, 12-0 in five innings. Nikki Koning took the win for Hamilton, allowing only one hit and striking out six. But that wasn’t her only accomplishment. She knocked a double and had two RBIs.

“We just didn’t come out ready to play today,” said Yellowjacket coach Jon Vercruyssen. “I thought we had a good week of practice.”

The Stevensville batters couldn’t find the key to Koning’s pitches and only connected once but couldn’t make the score.

“Coach Vercruyssen does a good job,” said Wilson. “They are always willing to play us hard. But we’ve got a lot of speed this year and teams are going to have to play defense to get us out.”

Wilson went on to say that his team took advantage of a few mistakes the Yellowjackets made. He added that in years past, the Hamilton team has always had a few heavy hitters who could be counted on to slam a few home runs. He doesn’t expect that this year and will instead, rely on speed to get their wins for them.

Corvallis came up with a big win over Frenchtown on Saturday, topping the Broncs, 7-5. Behind the arm of Kasie Conder, the Blue Devils held off a late rally to take the Central A game. The Blue Devils had a three-run fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead and then scored one run in each of the next two innings. But Frenchtown rallied back and scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning. Conder held on to stop the rally and take the win.

Conder finished with 12 strikeouts and didn’t walk any Broncs. She did, however, allow eight hits. Five errors by Frenchtown allowed the Blue Devils score as Corvallis only had three hits in the game. Conder, BriAnna Anderson and Danielle Murray each had an RBI. Corvallis has now improved to 2-0.

Florence took a decisive win over Deer Lodge on Thursday but then faltered at the hands of the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks on Saturday. The young Falcons defeated Deer Lodge. They regained their momentum in the final game of the weekend when they defeated Noxon.

Correction

In last week’s story about the Montana State Gymnastic competition, Stevensville’s Kyrie Campbell was left out, as she is a member of the Mismo Gymnastic Club of Missoula. Campbell won the Level 7 all around. The Bitterroot Star regrets the omission.
