Hamilton, Stevi split in tennis

The Hamilton boys team prevailed over the Stevensville Yellowjackets in tennis on Thursday. Led by the doubles teams of Evan Caughey and Evan Hanson, the Broncs took a 7-1 victory, sweeping all of the doubles matches. The Broncs’ No. 1 singles seed, Caleb Gueldenhaan, led the way on the singles board, defeating Eliot Pateman, 6-0, 6-2.

Stevensville’s numbers are down quite a bit in as far as boys’ tennis goes. There are only six players out this year. Ryan Dufresne of Stevensville was the only 'Jacket to win a match. He defeated Blake Brintnall, 8-2.

The tables were turned in the girls match. Although Hamilton’s No. 1 seed, Stephanie Huppert, defeated Maggie Parsons in their match, the Stevensville girls went on to take the next three matches. Alicia Buss defeated Ashli Mildenberger, Becky Weidow defeated Jenni Schreckendgust and Sharayah Campbell defeated Hayli Briggs. Hamilton’s Katie Andre defeated Courtney Liston and Rebecca Hankel defeated Misiel Ravina.

On the doubles side, the team of Jessica Hancock and Alison Mullin defeated Katie Andrew and Rebecca Hankel. Shelby Conner and Autumn Morris and Sarah Allred and Brittany Constantino also notched wins for Stevensville.

Alberton-Drummond Track Meet held

With the Easter weekend on hand, there was only one track meet this week. The Alberton Drummond Track Meet was held at Dornblaser Field on the UM Campus and featured a field of Class B and C schools and gave each team a glimpse into the future and the District and Divisional track meets.

Seeley took the top spot in the boys team scoring with 99.5 points. Darby finished fourth with a total of 67 points. Victor was ninth and Florence finished in 10th place.

Darby was powered by junior Paul Abrahamsen’s performances in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. Abrahamsen clocked a 4:40.36 in the 1,600, unofficially the fastest time in Class B this year. He was eight seconds faster than Victor’s Chris Mai who finished second. Seth Garbertt and Matt Stout finished third and fourth in that race. Both are from Darby. Abrahamsen also won the 3,200 with a time of 10:35.71. Garbertt and Stout followed in second and third place in that race. Florence’s Brett Patterson finished sixth.

Mai clocked a 2:07.34 in the 800 meter race to take that first place medal. Dillon Oliver of Darby was second with 2:11.44. Victor finished sixth in the 400 relay and was second in the 1,600 relay. Darby finished fourth in that relay. Michael Wemple of Victor finished first in the javelin with a throw of 157-11.

Florence’s Bryan Slingsby notched another monster throw in the shot put. The senior hefted the put 53’7 inches for the third best throw in the state this far in the season. Slingsby finished third in the discus. Sam Fernandez had a fifth place finish in the 200.

The Florence girls, behind the fast feet of Katie Neimeir, claimed first in the meet. Neimeir took first in the 100, the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Cortney Reynolds claimed the top spot in the 400 and finished second in the 200. Brooke Zeiler finished second in the 800 and the 1,600 and Rachel Warr was third in the 1600 and second in the 3200. Florence took first in the 1600 relay with the second best time in Class B in the state, 4:24.52. They were second in the 400 relay. Katie Kirby finished second in the triple jump and was third in the javelin.

Heather Demorest of Darby won the 800 with a time of 2:30.10 and the 1,600 with a time of 5:43.73. Keri Ledford finished fourth in the 3200. Missy DeWalt won the high jump and was second in the long jump. Kayla Schallenberger finished fourth in the 400 for the Tigers. Darby’s 400 relay team finished fourth and the 1,600 relay team was second behind Florence.

Track season is back in full swing this week with the Missoula County Invitational at Big Sky on Saturday.
