Proud to be a Victor Pirate

Giving back to one's community is something many parents hope to instill in their children, especially if the parents are civic-minded. For one family in Victor, these lessons have not fallen on deaf ears. Roy and Tristien Perry are very active in the Victor community. Roy is a long-time fireman. Tristien is an EMT and also volunteers at the school.

With her parents as an example, nine-year-old Suncee Perry is already following in her footsteps. She is combining her love of sports and the Victor Pirates with that of her family, in particular her late brother Zane. Zane died at just two months of age of congenital heart failure. Suncee was only two and a half years old at that time.

Construction is in the early stages on the new addition to Victor School which will include an auditorium. The auditorium, band room and science rooms have been funded by the Victor Schools Foundation and although the funding is in place for the building and rooms, the Foundation is still seeking donations to pay for the seating in the auditorium. Suncee knew the Foundation needed money for seating in the auditorium and she thought that "buying" a seat for Zane would be just the way to honor him.

She also was just a little upset that the tee shirt sales for the Victor Pirates didn't include any shirts for the future Pirates, only adult sizes. Instead of complaining and then forgetting about it, Suncee set out to raise money for an auditorium seat for her brother by selling Little Pirate Tee Shirts. Although she doesn't even know what a marketing degree entails, this young entrepreneur set about identifying what was wanted by the grade school students of Victor. She sent out a survey of 10 tee shirt slogans to every student from the kindergarten to the fifth grade, almost 200, according to her mom. And, 186 of the surveys came back. The winners were "Proud to be a Victor Pirate" or "I may be small, but I'm still a Victor Pirate." She also decided to include the adults by offering sweatshirts that say "Proud Parent of a Victor Pirate."

The next step for Suncee was the design of the tee shirt. With mom standing behind her and encouraging her, Suncee contacted local designer Peggy Woods of Northwest Design. Suncee knew of Woods because of the Chief Victor Days tee shirts that Woods has designed over the years. Woods worked up four tee shirt screens with different designs on them. However, the ultimate design of the tee shirt came from a tattoo Suncee found. Woods incorporated the Pirate tattoo into the shirt Suncee wanted.

Then it was on to selling the shirts. She calculated the cost of the tee shirt and decided to sell the shirts for $10 each. The sizes are children's sizes small, medium, large and extra large because she wanted every child in the grade school to be able to wear them. And, she added, she needed shirts for her younger sisters, four-year-old Ryan and five-year-old Moriah. Suncee said she will need to sell 100 shirts to be able to "buy" the chair in the auditorium.

She set up shop during the Parent/Teacher Conference and presold 41 shirts at that time. She also sold at the Victor Heritage Museum Chocolate Tasting. Suncee will also set up a table at the basketball games and hopes to sell a lot there. Suncee played Little Pirate ball last year and is looking forward to playing again this year. She hopes all of the team will support her and buy shirts as well.

Since she began her endeavor, Suncee has decided to expand her project and will try to buy another chair in her late grandfather's name. Earl Perry passed away last year and Suncee thinks it would be nice to remember him this way, too.

"It is so unique for a young person to do this," said Victor School Superintendent Orville Getz. "It is so amazing how she has thought this out. It is a reflection on her parents and so admirable for Suncee herself."

If you are interested in purchasing a Little Pirate tee shirt, call Suncee Perry at 642-6248. The Foundation has set prices at $300 per chair. Anyone who is interested in finding out more about "buying a chair" in the auditorium may contact Bill Stephani at 642-3494 or Kay Clevidence at Farmers State Bank in Victor.
