Corvallis takes own tournament

The Corvallis gym was the place to be on Saturday with wrestlers and fans converging from across Western Montana. The Glyn Brawley Classic, formerly the Corvallis Classic, gives wrestlers an early view of their competition. This year's event drew more competitors than ever, according to the Blue Devils' coach, Jeff Nagel.

The format is very similar to what the wrestlers will face at the end of the season at Divisionals. Wrestlers work their way through the ranks from the first round to the championship round. Some of those who made it to the championship round had to defeat three or four wrestlers while others only had to get past one or two opponents.

Corvallis, host of the tournament, didn't let the first place trophy leave the building, claiming the top spot with 237.5 points. That was 36 points better than second place Ronan. The Chiefs are expected to be one of the top teams in the west in Class A, according to Nagel. Three Blue Devils took championships to lead the way for Corvallis. Taylor Nagel, Chase Jessop and Landon DellaSilva notched wins throughout the day to claim the top prize. All won by decision. Depth was the key to Corvallis' victory. With several wrestlers to draw from at every weight, the Blue Devils piled on the points.

Hamilton also had three wrestlers win championships. David Love won at 135 pounds. He defeated Corvallis' Nathan DuBose in a 7-2 decision. Brock Anderson also defeated a Blue Devil enroute to his championship at 160 pounds. Anderson topped Bo Davenport in a 5-3 decision. Brandy Anderson pinned Joey Lopez of Frenchtown at 189 pounds.

Florence holds off Wardens

The girls team battled in Florence and the boys team battled it out in Deer Lodge. When the buzzer for both games sounded, Florence was ahead by one point. The Lady Falcons held off Deer Lodge, 44-43, while the Falcons stopped the Wardens, 51-50.

Florence took an early lead in the girls' game but the Wardens came back time and time again to tie or pull ahead. The Lady Falcons had a five-point margin at the end of the first quarter but were only ahead by two at the half. By the end of three, Deer Lodge was up by three points but the score that really mattered was the one at the end of four quarters, with the Lady Falcons the victors.

A full court press by Florence changed the momentum of the game in the fourth quarter and Florence again took the lead. Some poor decisions with regards to clock management almost cost the Lady Falcons the game but the team held on.

"You know, those are those special situatiuons in a game that you hope you've worked on by this time in a season," said coach Bryan Neuman, regarding the clock management issue. "But you know, we really haven't," he continued. "One of the things in other seasons is that we've been able to handle the ball pretty well at the end of a game. We usually spread the floor and go to a four corner type of situation. But this is such a young team, I can't overload them too much."

The Lady Falcons only have one senior on the roster. That senior, Amber Wahl, finished with 11 points. The Lady Falcons were led by junior Brooke Zeiler's 19 points. Finishing out the scoring for Florence were Jordan Rick with seven points and Cortney Reynolds with seven points. Deer Lodge was led by Jackee Beck's 11 points.

Kris Person of Florence left off last year shooting treys from all over the court. He is right back at it this year. His three-point shot with under 15 seconds remaining in the game tied the game at 50-all. After Person sank his free throw shot, the game was Florence's. Person was perfect from the line, shooting 8-for-8. He finished with 20 points in the 51-50 win. Jordan Dean added 16.

Saturday night, Florence was host to the Rams and Heartbreakers of Loyola. Unfortunately for Florence, the outcome was in favor of both the Heartbreakers and Rams.

Loyola defeated the Lady Falcons, 64-42. Although Florence was only down by two points at the end of the first period, the Breakers broke loose in the second and outscored them by 10. Loyola continued to put the pressure on and cruised to a 7B victory. Zeiler had 14 points to pace the Lady Falcons. Rae Baerlocher added seven points as did Reynolds. Wahl finished with five and Rick with nine. Mackenzie Grimstad had 28 points to pace the Breakers.

The Falcons could not overcome a 10-point first half and fell to Loyola, 51-46. Person was again the go-to person for the Falcons, scoring 14 points. Kiel Hansen added 13.

After losing to Florence on Thursday night, the Wardens of Deer Lodge were not about to drop another game in the Bitterroot. That was not good news for Darby.
