Lady Falcons battle tough teams

It was possibly the preview of the 7B and/or Western B title game and it was only the first weekend of conference play. The battle between the Loyola Heart Breakers and the Lady Falcons of Florence was a little rough at times and a whole lot exciting at others. The two battled into overtime before Loyola came away with the 43-39 win.

The Lady Falcons came out playing a little tentative and didn’t play as confident during the opening quarter of play. Jordan Rick put Florence on the board with a short jump shot and then turned around and made another off a steal on Loyola’s inbound pass. But the team struggled with their shots while Loyola made theirs.

“We were coming into the situation where we knew we were going to compete with them this year,” said coach Bryan Neuman of Florence. “I don’t think we were too revved up, I just think they were.”

Although Loyola pulled ahead even more in the second quarter, the Lady Falcons kept playing and worked to make a shot. But there were a lot of missed opportunities, according to Neuman, and that was the difference in the first half.

Both teams were playing a bit wild and fouls were an issue. However, once again, Loyola had success at the foul line while the ball bounced the other way for the Lady Falcons.

Florence settled down in the third quarter and began to execute their plays and make the shots. By the end of the period, Florence had pulled to within eight points. A defensive rebound by Brooke Zeiler off a missed Loyola free throw resulted in another basket by Rick. Then Kristina Kmetekova of Florence sank two free throws to pull the Lady Falcons to within four points of the Breakers.

“We did two out of the three things we wanted to do,” said Neuman. “We played hard today. We played together but we didn’t execute mentally. We weren’t mentally tough. I was happy for two out of three.”

As the clock ticked down, the intensity level picked up and Florence began to sense they were still in the ball game. Zeiler hit a shot from under the basket for two and was fouled in the process. She sank the extra bucket to tie the game with just under a minute remaining in the game. Both teams made turnover after turnover and missed their shots as the clock ticked down to the buzzer.

It was overtime. Loyola won the tip but then tipped the ball out of bounds. Florence had three tries at a basket but none fell through the hoop. The two traded free throws and then Florence took the lead when Rae Baerlocher hit the hoop. A Falcon turnover and a foul sealed the deal for Loyola.

“There were circumstances in overtime and late in the game where we had some chances,” said Neuman. “I can’t fault the effort. But that’s a huge advantage that they (Loyola) had. They’re shooting so well from the line and we so poorly, that was the difference right there.”

Florence was led by Rick’s 13 points. Zeiler added 12 in the effort.

Loyola 43, Florence 39 OT

Loyola - Janssen 10, Porch 4, Lamey 7, B Anderson 9, Mediros 7, Mansch 6.

Florence - Rae Baerlocher 3, Katie Niemeir 3, Brooke Zeiler 12, Jordan Rick 13, Jo Johnston 2, Brittany Heinz 1, Kristina Kmetekova 5.

Florence had another tough opponent on Saturday, the Powell County Wardens. Florence played tough defense and strong team offense in the 60-54 victory. Zeiler broke loose for 16 points and Kmetekova added 10.

Coach Mark Albert of Hamilton picked the Frenchtown Broncs to be a tough team in the Southwestern A conference and said they could even upset either of the top two teams, Anaconda or Dillon. However, the same could be said about the Lady Broncs of Hamilton after Friday night’s game.

Hamilton picked up a conference win with a 42-37 victory over the Frenchtown Broncs. After trailing at the end of the first quarter, Hamilton went into the half with a four-point lead. The two teams battled back and forth with the southern Broncs (Hamilton) holding Frenchtown off. Junior post Ashley Albert led the Bronc scoring with 15 points.

Hamilton 42, Frenchtown 37

Frenchtown - Lovell 2, Hendricks 2, Gies 21, Waubansee 3, Brown 9, Russ 2.

Hamilton - Ashley Albert 15, Misha Trotter 7, Averyl LaSalle 6, Cierra Smith 5, Annie Schultz 9.

Hamilton picked up their second win of the weekend with a 40-25 romp over Ronan. Although no one scored in double digits, the Bronc attack was balanced with Annie Schultz scoring nine points and Misha Trotter and Dayna Moerkerke each scoring eight.

Corvallis had a non-conference game against Sentinel. The Spartans gathered momentum each quarter and pulled ahead to take the 50-30 win. Corvallis only trailed by two points at the end of the first quarter but were down by nine by the end of the half. Kirstin Bull led the Blue Devil scoring with 11 points. Sunni Bleibtrey added 10.

Stevensville had the dauntless task of trying of fell the mighty Anaconda Copperheads. Although the Lady Yellowjackets played hard, they couldn’t stop the Copperheads and fell, 90-36. Blaire Brookshire led the ‘Jacket scoring with 14 points.

Darby took on Plains on Saturday and came away with a victory. Led by Missy DeWalt and Lindsey Trowbridge, the Lady Tigers played tough and kept their focus on the game which saw the lead change hands quite often. After leading at the end of the first quarter, Darby fell behind at the half. The third quarter was back and forth before Libby Ray of Darby sealed the lead with her free throws. Plains came back at the Lady Tigers time and time again but Darby held them off for the win. Missy DeWalt led the scoring for the Lady Tigers with 13 points.

The Lady Tigers lost to Seeley-Swan, 43-25, on Friday. DeWalt had eight points to lead the Lady Tigers.

Victor dropped two close conference games over the weekend. Philipsburg defeated Victor, 59-44. Freshman Elizabeth Taylor led the scoring with 14 points.

Arlee nipped Victor on Saturday in a very close game, 47-43. Katie McCormick had 17 points and Taylor again had 14.

‘Jackets stop Copperheads

The Stevensville Yellowjackets began their season looking for an identity. After losing Ryan Grove to an injury prior to the season, this young team is looking for someone to step up and take command. But if Saturday’s effort is any inkling of what may come this season, the identity they are looking for comes under the heading of “team.”

A balanced attack by the Yellowjackets held off a late charging Anaconda team to take a 61-57 victory. Anaconda scored six points in the final two minutes of the game to pull within two points before a free throw by Ethan Pateman and another by Richie Brushia put the Yellowjackets in the win column.

“We’re not good enough yet individually to beat people,” said coach Keith Chambers of his Stevi team. “So we have to bring a collective team effort.”

The team effort included 19 points by Nick Dahlquist and 16 by Pateman. Stevensville took an eight-point advantage into the locker room at the half and then built on it. But the physical Anaconda team didn’t let up and it was up to the ‘Jackets to hold them off.

“We had our chances,” said Chambers. “But at the free throw line we didn’t get that done. That’s an individual thing. There’s a lot of pressure on kids.”

But with Pateman, Boone Chambers and Logan Creech crashing the boards, the Yellowjackets were able to get offensive rebounds and keep the lead.

“I see a lot of positive things out there. I guess our effort tonight was a lot better than it was last night,” concluded Chambers. “We got a win.”

Stevensville 61, Anaconda 57

Anaconda - Wagner 8, Huber 15, Collins 17, Dedman 5, Ferguson 6, King 6

Stevensville - Drew Zeiler 4, Boone Chambers 6, Nick Dahlquist 19, Ethan Pateman 16, Richie Brushia 4, Logan Creech 11, Mike Thorstad 1.

Stevensville fell to Butte Central, 54-31. Dahlquist had nine points to lead the ‘Jacket scoring.

Hamilton split their weekend, topping Frenchtown, 66-50, and then falling to Ronan, 61-49. In the battle of the Broncs, Hamilton’s Ryan Turley dropped in 19 points and Jason Schallenberger added 13.

Victor picked up two wins over the weekend, topping both Philipsburg and Arlee. Mark Frye had a monster game in Philipsburg, controlling the boards and the basket and notching 23 points and 14 rebounds. Tyler Swanson also had a double double with 10 rebounds and 10 points in the 60-34 victory. Saturday, the Pirates topped Arlee, 67-56. Eric Taylor had 20 points and Eric Bissett added another 17.

Florence took on Loyola and Deer Lodge. Loyola defeated Florence 64-31 and Deer Lodge topped the Falcons, 64-57. Plains and Seeley both topped Darby. In other basketball action, Sentinel defeated Corvallis 77-44.
