Corvallis girls, Hamilton boys take SW A championships

 

The Corvallis girls and the Hamilton boys won the Southwest A championships and will take strong teams to the state meet in Butte this Friday and Saturday. Both teams are expected to be the ones to beat at the meet.

The Hamilton boys won with 165 points, followed by Corvallis at 135, Stevensville with 88, Dillon 64, Butte Central 56 and Anaconda 23. Hamilton’s distance runners and jumpers propelled the scoring for the team. Anthony Schmalz won both the 1,600 and the 3,200 with Karille Apendaile taking the 800 for the Broncs. The 400-relay team of Kris Cleveland, Kyle Crossman, Hunter Bumgarner and Adam Hanson took that race, while Anthony Beck, Schmalz, Cleveland and Apendaile won the 1,600 relays. Kameron Kohn won the high jump at 6-0 and the triple jump with a 42’ 7 ½” effort. Abe Westfall won the long jump with 19’ 10”.

Jadin Casey of Stevensville won the 400 with a time of 50.55. Daniel Pendergast won the 300 hurdles for Stevi with a time of 40.39.

Taylor Sylvester of Corvallis won the 200 with a time of 22.90. Tyler Olson won the javelin with a throw of 178’4”. Jesse Sims became eligible to participate this week. He won the shot put with a throw of 50’11”, and the discus with a throw of 160’7”.

There were a total of 526 points awarded for the girls in the divisional meet. Of these, Corvallis scored 255 points. Next in line was Dillon with 106, Hamilton with 97, Butte Central with 38, Stevensville with 21 and Anaconda with 9. The Blue Devils have won the state championship the last three years running and are looking to put another trophy in the case this weekend in Butte.

The Blue Devils won every race but the hurdles and the 1,600 relay. Corvallis’ Sadi Henderson won the 100 (12.60), 200 (25.75), and 400 (56.50). Her 400 time was the fastest in the state to date.  She also ran a leg on the 400-relay team along with Jessica Lewis, Katelyn Frost and Hannah Gale. The quartet clocked a 50.08 in that race. Emme Warnken won the 800 with a time of 2:26.40. Kacie Stewart won the 1,600 with 5:25.41 and Isabella Pape won the 3,200 with a time of 11:44.04. Courtney Albright won the discus with a throw of 119’ 3”. Kayla Lewis took the javelin with 126’ 2”. Jane Booth won the high jump with a leap of 5’6”. Katelyn Frost finished the day with a win in the pole vault at 11’ 6”.

Hamilton’s Annika Moore won the triple jump with an effort of 37’ ½”.
