Veterans Stand Down big success

As in past years, the 7th Annual Veterans Stand Down, held recently at the National Guard Armory in Hamilton, drew hundreds of veterans and others needing assistance. The many volunteers prepare for the event for months ahead of time, and all the assistance provided is totally free. Participants received medical and dental screening, haircuts, blood pressure monitoring, surplus clothing and blankets, counseling and benefits assistance, with additional help for homeless veterans. And everyone attending got a free lunch, too! The Stand Down is sponsored by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 938, with help from many other veterans organizations, businesses and invididuals. The latest Veterans Stand Down held in Hamilton last week was a tremendous success, according to Ruth Decker, one of the organizers. Over 350 veterans, escorted by 250 spouses and/or friends, joined 200 plus other homeless or at risk community members who showed up to take advantage of the community’s generosity. Decker said the tradition…

A necessary act

Having just participated in the No Coal Export Action which took place at our state capitol last week, I want to tell my friends and neighbors just why I chose to be arrested and what I learned from the experience. To be clear, I was not appealing to the regulators or politicians, hoping they…

Response to two letters

Thank you for providing a forum for political dialogue. I respond to two August 15th letters. First, regarding “Liberals create despair.” Most liberals, like most conservatives, are working people who pay taxes. My despair is that too many Americans are unemployed through no fault of their own. Our country is in a world-wide economic crisis…

Response to Keele

Once again, I am compelled to respond to Van P. Keele’s left wing political blather published on opinion pages of Ravalli County newspapers recently. I generally agree with much of Keele’s opening paragraph wherein he says , “You’ve got to hand it to Mitt Romney and fellow Republicans. They’re bold, in your face, and…
