Position: Water and Wastewater Equipment Operator
Department: Public Works
Accountable to: Mayor and Water/Sewer Superintendent
Summary of Work: Under the supervision of the water and sewer superintendent, this position operates and maintains water treatment plant, sewer plant and wells, along with water mains and sewer mains. This position will also operate all heavy equipment and performs a variety of manual and skilled labor in the construction and maintenance of streets, parks and the upkeep of the city vehicles.
Job Characteristics:
1. Nature of work: this level is primarily involved in the moderately complex operation of operating and maintaining water treatment plant, wells and wastewater plant and related equipment.
2. Essential Functions: Position requires ability to: use hand and power tools; communicate; operate some heavy equipment; drive trucks; have good depth perception; walk distances on uneven ground; visually inspect areas for safety; lift 50 pounds or more; climb ladders; follow written instructions. Conduct appropriate wastewater test, take wastewater and water samples, file reports as required.
Areas of Job Accountability and Performance: Operates and maintains grader, backhoe and other city equipment; drives trucks for the purposes of hauling materials for street construction and maintenance projects; performs sanding, snow and ice removal; sweeping and cleaning of streets and other related services; performs labor related to street maintenance and construction; repairs and installs street signs; repairs street department equipment and vehicles; regulates and maintains shop building and grounds; tests fresh water and waste-water effluent; repairs water and sewer system; operates and maintains welder; position requires shoveling, lifting and handling of heavy objects; working in extreme temperatures; requiring proper use of safety procedures to avoid injury and performs related duties as required.
Job Requirements:
1. Requirements:
A. Wastewater treatment Class 1 for this position is required.
B. This position requires water treatment and distribution certification. Within 18 months of employment, this position is required to take and pass the Montana State Certification Exam for water treatment and distribution, waste-water treatment Class 1.
C. A Montana Class B CDL license is required within one year.
2. Knowledge: This position is required to possess knowledge of wastewater/water treatment, operation of heavy equipment and maintenance.
3. Abilities: This position must have the ability to drive truck in various types of traffic and weather conditions, establish and maintain safety conscious attitude, understand and carry out written and verbal instructions, establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors and the public.
Salary range: $14-$16/hr DOE
