Local newspapers report that Commissioner Kanenwisher “pointed to a twofold increase in juvenile detentions”. He asked if the increase in juvenile arrests had anything to do with the commission’s decision to close the juvenile detention center. The implications of this “question” regarding the motives of law enforcement are unjustified and inappropriate.
I agree with Commissioner Kanenwisher’s claim that Commissioners should ask hard questions when faced with hard decisions. There is clearly a disagreement on this issue. But, questioning the honesty and integrity of the Sheriff or anyone else with whom you disagree should not be the first question. It should be the last.
